The Republic Through the Lens of the Social Economy

The relationship between the social Republic and the social economy is characterized by productive tension: although stemming from distinct origins — state-driven and citizen-based — both pursue a shared goal of social justice. This article traces the historical development of the social economy in France, from its working-class roots in the 19th century to its contemporary reconfiguration as part of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE). It highlights the sector’s institutionalization, its expansion to include solidarity-based enterprises, and the diversification of its forms through the emergence of mission-driven companies and Commons. By bridging citizen initiatives and republican frameworks, the social economy emerges both as a tool of public action and as a vector for societal transformation.
